Hawking was born in 1942, in Oxford, England. His birthday was also the 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo long a source of pride for the noted physicist. He is a theoretical physicist whose theory of exploding black holes drew upon both relativity theory and quantum mechanics. He also worked with space-time singularities.
